Одетый вычурно, претенциозно. Происхождение этого выражения неясно. Слово nines, по некоторым утверждениям, является изменением от слова eyne, старинного английского слова, обозначающего глаза. Однако фраза эта не употреблялась до XVIII в. Есть предположения, что nine (9) указывает на высокую степень оценки, как, например, 10 является показателем самого совершенства. Можно взять для сравнения выражение dressed to kill (быть одетым с большим вкусом и очень модно); имеется в виду, что одеждой можно покорить кого-либо, сразить наповал, «убить».
